Taking Care of Yourself

Take Care of Yourself

We’ve all heard that we need to take care of ourselves. Have you ever taken a moment to think about what that really means? It could mean a number of things, like putting yourself first before someone or something else, eating right, exercising, get a physical every year, know your blood work numbers, and treat yourself once in awhile to relaxation.

When I was overweight weighing in at 255 pounds, I thought I was taking care of myself, but what I didn’t know is that I was killing myself. I had Type 1 and 2 Diabetes, Neuropathies in my feet and digestive tract heading its way next to my eyes, and also had blood pressure problems. The question I want you to ask yourself, “are you really taking care of yourself or are you killing yourself and don’t know it?”

Think truthfully and be honest with yourself because the only person you’re hurting is you and then your family members when you suffer or pass away from a heart attack.

I lied to myself for the majority of my life, and I know everyone out there who has an eating problem does the same thing. What I want you to get out of this blog is to honestly think about it, and then I dare you to do something about it.

Nutrisystem® worked for me. Perhaps it’s time to make the change in your life and start “caring” for yourself?

When the “New” becomes “Old”

Its been a long time since writing anything, I haven’t really felt like it to be honest sometimes the new becomes old.

The newness of losing weight and motivation that comes with it can get old. The challenge is to keep the excitement up and the knowledge of knowing every day you have to make the right decisions to make it work.

My goal is to never gain my weight back, and for me to complete this goal I have to daily think about what I’m going to eat and make a conscious decision before putting it in my mouth. I also have to pump myself up to exercise when I’m not “feeling like it”.

When you lose your weight, its not over my friends. You have to go through a lot of “self examination” to dig deep down and find the answers you need to continue with maintenance. You will find that you have to change how you eat, what you eat because your body will stop burning and you’ll gain a few pounds. It can be discouraging because your doing everything right.

However, don’t give up!!! Stick with it, make small changes just like exercising. You can’t do the same workout every time your body needs changes to keep burning those calories.

Hang tough because nothing is better than being thin!

Struggling or not?

Over the last couple of weeks my body has changed so much. The scale says I’ve gained 4 pounds, and I had a hard time adjusting mentally with this new number; however, today I’m accepting it.

I’ve cut all the bad carbs out of my diet over the last 2 weeks and tried replacing those calories with protein. But the scale doesn’t move downward. I continue to exercise as much as possible such as, biking outside around 75 miles a week, stationary bike, and weights.

I’ve been told it’s muscle gain, and I haven’t really accepted that idea yet, but I’m getting closer because of “how I feel.” I feel leaner, stronger, and I am larger in a good way. So if your having trouble accepting what the scales telling you because you’ve done everything by the book, take a good hard look at yourself before thinking of giving up. You might be surprised at what you see.

Your Mind is a Powerful Tool

How many times have you heard “if you put your mind to something, you can do it?” I’ve heard it so much, in fact, I ignored it for a long time. Now that I have achieved my weight loss goals and I’m keeping it off, I am a true believer in this statement. So many times in my life I wished I was the other person running or the other person so thin, but now I am that person. Okay, okay, I can’t run because of my neuropathy in my feet, but you get my drift.

My husband is a runner; someone who loves it more than I could ever imagine. He hurt himself a few years back. It first started with his knee, and then he developed a Neuroma in his foot. He was in terrible pain, and tried everything. He even had surgery to remove the Neuroma. The pain continued, but this time it moved to another part of his foot, his heel. He had to wear Crocs around the house and even wear this horrid boot on his foot so he could walk. The doctors kept telling him, “There isn’t anything there. We can’t help you.” Why do I tell you this? Because after all that, he never gave up his dream for running.

He worked and worked on different stretching techniques and taping his foot for the longest time. He did special training runs, but sometimes he had to stop because the pain was too great. He would get so mad that this was happening to him, because it interfered with his running. Yet he made his mind up he wouldn’t give it up. He would continue to run no matter what, he would keep trying.

On Saturday, June 5th, he ran another Ultra Marathon (32 miles) this time without quitting, without pain, and came in 3rd place. So, whatever you do, don’t give up your dreams of being thin, or being fit and healthy, because we are ALL capable of being that tough mentally to get through whatever obstacle we have to face in this lifetime.

What Is Losing Weight Mean to YOU?

A few weeks ago the author of “Woman Food and God,” Geneen Roth was on Oprah, and I have to admit, I bought the book. There was one thing she said that made my ears perk up and that was, “she lost her weight without dieting and eats whatever she wants.” It might not be her exact words. I believe it has been two weeks since I watched the show.

So, I started reading this book, and I completely disagree with her religious beliefs, but she has some really neat and interesting points on food.

I’m only on page 41, but I’m going to write about the things that inspire me through reading this book, and maybe you’ll decide you also want to read it too.

Today, she uncovered to me a lot of things. She asked “Who am I?” Well, at this point, I can’t answer that. All I ever wanted is to be thin, and now that I’m here, something doesn’t feel right. Because the question I have that no one but me can answer, “is that all there is?”

Before losing weight, I always said to myself, “if I were thin I could feel better, be sexier, work would be better, not be so tired and everything would always be perfect.” In my mind, losing weight was the answer to everything! However, now that I have lost my weight and the build up of excitement of losing weight is done, I ponder and am left with only my mind saying “but only if you were 5 pounds lighter, it would be so much better.” It’s really crazy!

I’m glad I bought this book, because I never looked at losing weight the way she brought it out. Losing weight is not a solution to fixing things that might be wrong in your life. It does make you feel better, it does make a diabetic very close to being normal again, it does make you feel great about yourself and your outlook on life changes. But you’re still left with that same person you always were, and you have to come to grips with that person. You have to discover “Who am I?”

Today I leave you with a few of her words.
“During the first few days of a retreat, people are convinced that I have the answer to the puzzles of their lives. They really truly believe that there is something that will fix their weight problems and thereby fix what they can’t put into words: what it feels like to be them. To live their particular lives, with their particular families, with their particular minds. What it’s like to have insulin-dependent diabetes or a friend who was just diagnosed with breast cancer. They realize intellectually that losing weight will not take their friends cancer away, but the promise of weight loss is that it will allow them to live on a magical piece of earth from which everything else will be manageable.”
